Ancient Greece & The Oracles

In ancient Greece no voice or authority was more influential than that of women chosen by Apollo, God of Prophecy to foretell the future and reveal the present. They were known as The Oracles of Apollo at Delphi (from the Latin verb ōrāre, to speak) or High Priestess.  The Oracles chewed laurel leaves and inhaled subterranean vapors rising from a crack underneath the temple and earth surface. They then entered into a divine state and communicated revelations on behalf of the God Apollo.

Citizens and politicians of Greece would travel from far distances to the temple to consult these High Priestess with questions regarding love, life matters and state affairs. Such predictions as the fall of the Great Roman Empire was foretold. The philosopher Socrates frequented the Oracles, and in his teachings credits them for his personal development. Michelangelo gave the Oracles a place of honor on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.
